Dozens of Syrian Army soldiers were killed in an ambush after seeking refuge in Iraq yesterday, amplifying concerns of Syrian violence spilling across its borders and destabilizing its neighbors.

The soldiers were attacked in Anbar province with bombs, grenades, and gunfire while being transported back into Syria by the Iraqi Army, reports The Associated Press. An estimated 48 Syrian soldiers, who were seeking a temporary reprieve from fighting with rebels over the border, and at least six Iraqi military personnel were killed. It was?the first such killing of Syrians in Iraq since the conflict began two years ago, reports The Wall Street Journal.?

It is unclear who was responsible for the ambush, but Jassim al-Halbousi, provincial council member in Anbar, told the Associated Press, ?This attack bears the hallmarks of the Al Qaeda terrorist organization,? adding that the borders need to be secured ?at the highest level of alert.?

At the time of the ambush, the Syrian soldiers were being transported to a different border crossing, south of where they originally entered the country. According to AP, the Iraqi government insists it allowed the soldiers into the country on "humanitarian grounds" and is "not picking sides in the Syrian conflict."

"We do not want more soldiers to cross our borders and we do not want to be part of the problem," said Ali al-Moussawi, a?spokesman for Iraq?s prime minister. "We do not support any group against the other in Syria."

The fact that the soldiers were on Iraqi soil at all raises questions about Baghdad's apparent willingness to quietly aid the embattled regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The well-coordinated attack, which Iraqi officials blamed on al-Qaeda's Iraq arm, also suggests possible coordination between the militant group and its ideological allies in Syria who rank among the rebels' most potent fighters.

The Wall Street Journal reports that state-owned Iraqia Television broadcast a ministry of defense statement warning "all fighting sides in Syria not to move their armed conflict into Iraqi lands, or violate the security of the Iraqi border.?

The New York Times reports that Iraq has said it will deploy more soldiers to its border with Syria, raising fears among Middle East experts that Iraq, still fragile from its own sectarian war, will become further embroiled in the conflict next door. According to the Times, ?The attack threatens to inflame the sectarian tensions that already divide Iraq, where a Sunni minority sympathizes with Syria?s overwhelmingly Sunni opposition.?

Middle East analyst Juan Cole wrote today that the violent spillover into Iraq is a concerning development for regional sectarian violence.

Alarabiya was reporting Tuesday morning Iraqi time that Iraqi tanks had advanced on the Free Syrian Army checkpoint at al-Ya`rabiya, presumably seeking revenge for the ambush. That isn?t a good sign, to have an Iraqi-Syrian border clash?.

Shiite-ruled Iraq faces an on-going guerrilla war from radical Sunnis, some of them apparently now fighting in Jabhat al-Nusra in Syria. In addition, the Sunni Arab population of the west and the north of the country, about a fifth of the population, has been demonstrating peacefully against the al-Maliki government, with large rallies, for several months. Al-Maliki is afraid that if the Sunni radicals win Damascus, there will be severe effects on Mosul and Ramadi. Indeed, those effects may already have begun.

Joshua Landis, director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma and author of the influential blog Syria Comment, told the Times, ?A number of us have been saying that Iraq is the one most affected by the meltdown in Syria.?

Mr. Landis added that, ?In that region, the tribes go right across the Syrian border, and most of the people are related by blood.?They?re in one common struggle.?

Toby Dodge, a Middle East expert at the London School of Economics, told AP that the fact that the soldiers were allowed to enter Iraq in the first place worries him.

"If this goes on, al-Maliki's government is aligning itself with Iran and the Assad regime against the rest of the Middle East and the will of the Syrian people," Mr. Dodge said. "That is a huge gamble."

Unlike Iran and Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah, Maliki has not expressed ?outright support? for President Bashar al-Assad?s regime, the Times reports.

Others in the region are concerned about spillover as well, with Israel telling the United Nations Security Council yesterday that it can?t be expected to do nothing as the Syrian conflict breaches its borders, according to Reuters.??Israel cannot be expected to stand idle as the lives of its citizens are being put at risk by the Syrian government's reckless actions," Israeli UN Ambassador Ron Prosor wrote to the Security Council. "Israel has shown maximum restraint thus far."

Errant Syrian fire has landed in Israeli territory multiple times since the conflict began. The Christian Science Monitor reported last week that Israel has taken steps to prepare the border region for the possibility of violence, installing a new fence and surveillance cameras and the deploying troops in the area.?

Violence ? which has killed at least 70,000 people since the conflict began in 2011 ? isn?t the only thing reaching into neighboring countries. The UN expects the number of refugees, who have settled mainly in Jordan, Turkey, and Lebanon, to reach 1 million this week, reports The Washington Post.

[O]fficials say Syrians fleeing alleged massacres and Damascus?s fresh bombing campaigns are stepping into a growing humanitarian catastrophe, either in overcrowded camps with little to offer or, even more frequently, in urban areas that struggle to support them and where the welcome has worn thin.

The crisis is compounded by a growing funding gap, which U.N. agencies say is forcing cutbacks on basic supplies and shelter.

Although the international community pledged to meet a $1.5 billion U.N. appeal in December for aid to Syrian refugees, the U.N. refu?gee agency says it has yet to receive 20 percent of the promised money. In any case, the requested assistance was set to cover the needs of what was then a regional growth of about 1,500 new refugees per day ? a mere quarter of the average number now entering neighboring countries daily.

KinderStuff Brings Private Label Kids? Fashion Online, Plus A Secondhand Store When Clothes Are Outgrown

kinderstuffKinderStuff is launching today in the U.S. with a new take on e-commerce – no, not subscription commerce – but an online store for kids’ clothes which you can buy new, then return when the clothes are outgrown for a credit towards future purchases. The gently worn clothes will be resold on a separate section of the website, while those that were worn a little less than gently are donated to charity. The site actually soft-launched four months ago in Germany, and the startup, now based both in Munich and L.A., plans to operate its European and U.S. version?simultaneously, According to co-founder Robert Rebholz, who built KinderStuff alongside Sebastian Schmoeger and Dr. Alexander Reichhuber. He says they saw the big opportunity here in the U.S. to make this model work.?”Parents in the U.S. are a lot more engaged online,” he explains. “People are buying more stuff – especially in the kids’ fashion space. And nobody has created an online brand in the kids’ fashion space here yet.” Rebholz?notes that they had seen the rise on online brands like Warby Parker for eyewear and MeUndies for undergarments, as well as interesting startups in the kids’ fashion space like subscription-based Wittlebee, but no online brands yet that sold their own private label. (Wittlebee is actually working on its own private label?brand, following the acquisition of Cottonseed Clothing, but I think the point?Rebholz was making is that its current business model is remarkably different from his. We should also point out that there are small-scale private labels out there.) The clothing sold on the KinderStuff site at launch is aimed at those aged 0 to 2, but the plan is to quickly expand into the 2 to 6 range for both boys and girls. The site offers around 45 pieces on its German version, and 15 pieces in the U.S. including t-shirts, onesies, long-sleeve shirts, and more. New items are somewhat pricey – $15 to $25 each – but this is an organic, eco-friendly and sustainable line, built in collaboration with designers in some cases, so they feel they can ask higher price points than something you’d find at Target, for example. (Designers get a percentage of sales which varies, we’re told). The online second-hand store will arrive in around three months, after the e-commerce side has time to ramp up. The clothes are manufactured in local markets – Germany or just outside

Restaurant inspections, Georgia Gwinnett College food court | Food ...

The food court at Georgia Gwinnett College earned an ?A? on its most recent health report card. But that?s after failing an initial routine inspection late last month.

The student food service consists of a Quiznos sub shop and three cafes operated by Sodexo. The company is in charge of all on-campus dining services at GGC, said college spokeswoman Sally Ramey.

During the initial routine inspection, the health score was lowered to a 64/U because management had no parasite destruction documentation for the raw fish sushi. Also, employees did not keep track of how long cooked chicken wings and strips were left in a hot holding cabinet.

In other code violations, foods were not stored properly in the freezer and cooler, and an employee working with raw chicken wore the same pair of gloves for multiple tasks.

After re-inspection, the health score improved to a 90/A. There were still problems with food storage, and some yogurt in a self-service display had to be discarded because it been there ?too long. And ?sushi is off the menu, at least for now.

Sodexo spokesman Greg Yost said the company is committed to following strict safety procedures and guidelines in its food operations. He said the initial health inspection did not meet company standards and Sodexo addressed the issue immediately.

?Our operations at the college were re-inspected and we earned an A rating, which is in-line with our outstanding inspection track record on the campus, dating back to 2008,? he said.

Current scores of other GGC dining services ?include: student center dining hall, 90/A; and GGCity Caf?, 100/A.

'Patriot' groups on the rise as gun debate continues

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) ? President Barack Obama's administration and the gun control debate after the Connecticut school shooting have led to surging numbers of anti-government "patriot" groups, according to a civil rights group that tracks extremist groups.

The Southern Poverty Law Center reported the rising numbers on Tuesday in its annual report on extremist groups.

The number of anti-government patriot groups, one category tracked by the center, rose dramatically over the past four years, from 149 groups in 2008 to 1,360 today, researchers reported. That was up about 7 percent from the 1,274 active in 2011.

The election and re-election of the nation's first black president and the rugged economy have fueled their growth, said Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the SPLC.

"The anger, angst, frustration, fear surrounding the economy have very much poured fuel on this fire," Potok said.

On gun control, the debate following the Newtown, Conn., mass murder of schoolchildren has led to "a kind of white-hot rage unleashed on both the radical right and also within more mainstream political circles," he said.

In the week following the Dec. 14 school shooting, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it conducted more background checks for firearms sales and permits to carry than it has in any other one-week period since 1998.

Some critics believe the SPLC is too broad in labeling hate and extremist groups, to the point of including legitimate political organizations that oppose illegal immigration, gun control, gay rights and other issues.

The center's researchers say they use a variety of methods to track anti-government groups and compile their list from field reports, patriot publications, law enforcement sources and news reports. Potok said only active groups are included.

"We are not just looking at one man and a computer," he said.

The report states: "Generally, Patriot groups define themselves as opposed to the 'New World Order,' engage in groundless conspiracy theorizing, or advocate or adhere to extreme anti-government doctrines."

The FBI defines military extremists as anti-government groups often organized into paramilitary groups that follow a military-style rank hierarchy and typically engage in wilderness, survival, or other paramilitary training, according to a September 2011 FBI report on domestic terrorism.

Along with the rise of extremist groups, Potok said there have been several home-grown terrorist plots against government buildings and leaders in recent months. He compared the climate to time leading up to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

The report cites several cases, including one centered on a Georgia Army base involving a group known as F.E.A.R. (Forever Enduring Always Ready). Federal prosecutors maintain that F.E.A.R. was led by active-duty soldiers at Ft. Stewart who also plotted bomb attacks in Savannah and aimed to poison apple crops in Washington state.

Fitness And Health Tracker Fitbit Is Raising $30M At A $300M-Plus ...

Fitness technology and hardware startup Fitbit is raising north of $30 million in growth capital at a $300 million-plus valuation, according to multiple sources. The company last raised $12 million in January 2012 from Foundry Group, True Ventures, SoftTech VC and Felicis Ventures. It?s unclear who the investors are in this round.

Fitbit, which was a TechCrunch 50 finalist in 2008, offers a number of devices that track weight, nutrition, exercise, sleeping patterns and other health-related data for users.

The company originally launched the Fitbit Tracker, which has now evolved into the One Wireless Activity and Sleep Tracker. This device clips onto clothing or slips into a pocket and captures information about daily health activities, such as steps taken, distance traveled, calories burned, exercise intensity levels and sleep quality. Fitbit?s Wi-Fi-enabled scale, the Aria, will transmit both weight and body fat measurements wirelessly to your Fitbit account.

In the past year, Fitbit launched a more lightweight version of the tracker called the Zip, which measures steps, distance and calories burned. And most recently, the company debuted the Flex Flex Wristband, which is similar in form to the Jawbone UP or Nike FuelBand, and also tracks steps, distance, calories burned, active minutes, hours slept and quality of sleep.

While there is no shortage of health and fitness trackers that have emerged in the past few years, Fitbit was one of the first. So the company has a leg up on some of the competition when it comes to manufacturing, ironing out the kinks, developing companion products and more. And we?re told the company is making meaningful revenue these days, justifying its heftier valuation.

Google Has a Hip-Hop Sensation Working in Its New York Office, and This Is His Google Song

Andrew Fink is a New York-based Google drone by day, and unsigned hip-hop artist from Baltimore by night. Today is his 25th birthday, and he just collopsed that Jekyll and Hyde existence into a music video. "Welcome to Google" is filmed in the company's offices, but the rhymes are all Fink's. We're speechless. More »

Canonical announces Mir, a custom display server that will serve up future versions of Unity

Canonical announces Mir

The X Window Server has been serving Linux users faithfully for the better part of a decade. And Ubuntu has been using the standard-issue display server to push its GUI to monitors across the globe since its color scheme was more sludge than slick. Canonical originally planned to replace the aging X with another display server called Wayland, but the developers apparently couldn't bend the compositing-friendly protocol to their cross-device whims. So, Mir was created. The goal for Mir is to easily scale from the TV, to the desktop, to tablets and phones while providing "efficient support for graphics co-processors." That means Canonical is relying heavily on GPU acceleration, which will require the cooperation of manufacturers like NVIDIA, AMD, Qualcomm and others.

As part of the cross-form factor convergence, Unity will be getting a rewrite entirely in QT and QML (the current version uses a Nux-based shell on the desktop). The Unity Next project will incorporate several core components from the Ubuntu Touch interface, inching the Linux OS closer to its goal of a truly unified codebase. Mir should make its debut on the mobile variants of Ubuntu soon, with Canonical aiming to get the UI unified and stable in time for the next LTS in April of 2014. For some more technical details check out the source links.
