Burger King settles with Christian teen, fired after seeking to wear ...

CWN - January 23, 2013

Burger King has agreed to pay $25,000 to a Pentecostal teenage girl who was fired because she wished to a wear a long skirt instead of pants.

In August, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed suit on behalf of Ashanti McShan, who had been hired to work at a Burger King restaurant in Texas. ?At the time of her interview for the job, Ms. McShan asked to wear a skirt instead of uniform pants as a religious accommodation,? the EEOC lawsuit stated. ?Defendant assured her that she could wear a skirt to work. However, when she arrived at work for orientation, the store management informed Ms. McShan that she could not wear a skirt and that she had to leave the store ? The result of the foregoing practices has been to deprive Ashanti McShan of equal employment opportunities because of her religious beliefs and observances as a Christian Pentecostal.?

As part of the settlement, Burger King?s restaurant managers in Texas will receive training ?advising them of the requirements and prohibitions of the federal anti-discrimination laws with a special emphasis on religious discrimination.?

Award winning U.S. reporter Richard Ben Cramer dies of lung cancer

(Reuters) - Pulitzer-Prize winning correspondent and author Richard Ben Cramer, best known for his chronicle of the 1988 U.S. presidential election, died on Monday in Baltimore.

The cause of death was lung cancer, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, where Cramer worked for seven years. He was 62.

Cramer won the 1979 Pulitzer Prize in international reporting for his coverage of Middle Eastern affairs for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Esquire named his 1986 profile of Boston Red Sox slugger Ted Williams one of the seven greatest stories published in the magazine's history.

"What It Takes: The Way to the White House," Cramer's 1,000-page account of the 1988 presidential campaign, painted a rich portrait of American political luminaries such as former U.S. President George H. W. Bush, former Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis, former Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole and current U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.

Though it received tepid reviews at the time of its 1992 publication, it was ultimately hailed as one of the best books of political journalism. New York University's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute named "What It Takes" one of the top 100 works of U.S. journalism in the 20th century.

Cramer's prolific writing career included stints at the Inquirer and Baltimore Sun newspapers, contributions to magazines like Esquire and Sports Illustrated, and multiple books on topics as diverse as the Israel-Palestine conflict and the life of New York Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio.

A native of Rochester, New York, Cramer earned degrees from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. At the time of his death, he was living in Chestertown, Maryland in an old white farmhouse that he picked out with the help of Biden, Politico reported in 2010.

Cramer had been working on a book about New York Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez, tentatively titled "The Importance of Being Alex: A Life with the Yankees," before taking a hiatus in 2012, the New York Daily News reported in June.

Kno launches 'Kno Me' interactive textbook metrics, lets you study your studying

It was almost a year ago that we first heard about Kno's smart textbook metrics system "Kno Me." Now the software is set to actually launch, and find its way into students' (and parents') hands. As a refresher, the system provides analytics on your (or your children's) study patterns, letting you see how long you have studied for, amount of time interacting with the subject matter, percentage of pages that have been annotated and more. Kno Me is available for all of the firm's interactive textbooks and launches tomorrow on the iPad, Windows 8 and browser platforms, with Android and Windows 7 coming by the end of the month. Kno Me is free, and will be pushed out via the existing app.

Britain debates: What should European welfare look like?

The debate in Parliament, which today passed a measure to temporarily cap most welfare benefits, is part of a larger debate in Europe over how to handle welfare amid the debt crisis.

By Ben Quinn,?Correspondent / January 8, 2013

On Tuesday, the British government pushed through a parliamentary vote to temporarily cap welfare benefits, setting down a dividing line on an issue that will be pivotal in determining who wins the UK's next general election.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

But it also is the latest round of a struggle being played out across virtually every?European nation facing the questions of what a welfare state should look like in the 21st century and how it can be subsidized in an era when the right (and many on the left) claim that dwindling resources mean traditional models are no longer affordable.

The bill, backed by the government's Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties coalition, caps annual increases in many benefits to 1 percent ? effectively a real-term cut as it is below the expected level of inflation ? and passed the House of Commons easily despite opposition from both the opposition Labour Party and even from some Liberal Democrat members of the governing coalition.

Domestic debate over dependency

The government paints the measure as necessary to fix an increase in benefits paid to supposedly work-shy ?shirkers? over the past five years at a time when another group characterized as ?strivers? have been unfairly shouldering the burden of paying taxes.

"Where is the fairness, we ask, for the shift worker, leaving home in the dark hours of the early morning, who looks up at the closed blinds of their next door neighbor sleeping off a life on benefits?? asked Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne last year when the measure was announced.

But critics charge that Mr. Osborne's imagery was a classic example of Conservative Party scapegoating of the poor, meant to play to a particular strata of voters fiercely fought over by the Tories and Labour. Labour points to analysis showing seven million working households will lose out by an average ?165 ($265) annually under the plan. And Sarah Teather, a Liberal Democrat member of Parliament who lost her job as children and families minister in a reshuffle in September, also said she would be voting against.

"As a constituency MP representing a very deprived area in London, I feel deeply anxious about the policy and I will be voting against the bill... very reluctantly and with a very heavy heart," she told the BBC.

By ramping up the rhetoric ahead of today's vote, Britain's Conservative Party sought to exploit perceived associations between their Labour opponents and notions of an outdated welfare state. Drawing on focus group research, one recent Conservative election attack advert featured an image of a man on sofa watching day-time television and asked if the government should support ?hard-working families or people who don?t work.?

Polling last week also revealed that more than two out of five people believe that benefits were too generous, and three out of five buy into the idea that a culture of dependency had emerged. A British trade union umbrella body that commissioned the research said Tuesday that public support for measures such as the one adopted by Parliament was based on ignorance of who will suffer.

A European problem

But in many ways, the British debate over how to deal with its welfare state amid an economic crisis is par for the course in Europe ? and one that, according to the British government, the UK is handling better than its peers on the continent.

(AP) ? The Senate's Republican leader said Sunday he is reserving judgment on whether to support former Sen. Chuck Hagel, the front-runner to be the next defense secretary, and predicted that his former colleague would face serious question about his stands on Iran and Israel.

President Barack Obama may round out his new national security leadership team this coming week, with a nomination for Pentagon chief expected and a pick to lead the Central Intelligence Agency possible. Obama was returning Sunday from his vacation in Hawaii.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said any defense nominee must have "a full understanding of our close relationship with our Israeli allies, the Iranian threat, and the importance of having a robust military."

McConnell told ABC's "This Week" that Hagel, a Nebraska Republican who left the Senate in 2009, has "certainly been outspoken in foreign policy and defense over the years. The question we will be answering, if he's the nominee, is do his views make sense for that particular job?"

McConnell said he would "wait and see how the hearings go and see whether Chuck's views square with the job he would be nominated to do." He added: "I'm going to take a look at all the things that Chuck has said over the years and review that, and in terms of his qualifications to lead our nation's military."

Obama, in an interview that aired last Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" called Hagel "a patriot" who "has done extraordinary work" in the Senate and on an intelligence advisory board.

Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the second-ranking Senate Democrat, told CNN's "State of the Union" that Hagel "is a serious candidate if the president chooses to name him."

Hagel has criticized discussion of a military strike by either the U.S. or Israel against Iran. He also has backed efforts to bring Iran to the table for talks on future peace in Afghanistan.

Some lawmakers have been troubled by his comments and actions on Israel, including his reference to the "Jewish lobby" in the United States.

Obama has nominated Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., as his next secretary of state, in what was the president's first step in filling out his second term Cabinet and national security team.

Kerry, as well as the nominees for the Pentagon and CIA, must be confirmed by the Senate.

A Bit Of Brain Training | Personal Development | Self Improvement

homers-brain-150x150

A Bit Of Brain Training

The brain is a tireless workhorse that controls all bodily activities. It should be kept in good shape at all times. This can be done by exposing it to various brain training methods. Take a look.

Your brain does not have the innate ability to store energy therefore it is your job to fuel it with the appropriate nourishment. You cannot tell it to run laps if it?s hungry. A diet rich in antioxidants and vitamins is the way to go. This will give your brain an edge in the memory and cognition department.

It will be of big help if you constantly entice your brain with food varieties. Make sure that before engaging in puzzling and mind-boggling stunts you have taken a well-balanced meal. Fruit, whole grain, veggies, nuts, meat, and the likes should be amply present on your plate come eating time.

Part of the whole training thing is starting the day right. Pack your breakfast with beans. According to studies these tiny wonders can give your cognitive skills a huge lift. Make sure you and the kids move away from those table junks so that tasks are completed with ease.

Rev your brain up and tease it with playful thoughts. Challenge it every now and then as your day goes on. Develop a habit of engaging in a stimulating talk with a friend or colleague. Take on new hobbies and master new skills. Welcome something new such as learning a foreign language or art.

The given actions will improve the blood flow in your brain thereby strengthening the synapses between the nerves. You can spice things up by multi-tasking. Flip the pages of a novel or complete a crossword while talking on the phone or surfing the net.

Laughing your brains out may not sound too good but it can help. Experts state that people who were exposed to some sort of comedy tend to perform better in works that demand a high dose of creative thinking. These people express feelings of excitement, alertness, and interest. Although you should be warned that a good laugh is not adequate to make your brain perform during tasks that need to be done on a formal setting.

As you reach your front door after a hard day?s work think of less TV involvement. Studies indicate that people who are so glued to their favorite program tend to go in a neutral state wherein high amounts of alpha brain waves are wondering about the halls of the brain. This is like hiding away in the darkest corner of your home doing nothing.

During moments of relaxation you can help your brain ease up by adding new terms in your arsenal. Having the right words at the right time can do you great wonders like bagging that position you?ve been working on or hitting the jackpot with a date. Limit this exercise to a maximum of eight words. Getting too excited and going beyond will hinder needed retention.

Intellectuals who made their glorious way into recognition dared to be different. They slipped away from conventional knowledge and laid out unique assumptions. Question the ones you know off to trigger the thought process on a regular basis.

Training the brain requires constant practice. Observe these things regularly and you?ll end up with healthy and happy thoughts.

Siemens' waterproof Aquaris hearing aid means rain doesn't need to stop play, we go ears on

Siemens Aquaris hearing aid means rain doesn't need to stop play, we go ears on

It's no fun being deaf or hearing impaired. Especially if you are fond of the great outdoors and all the weather-related perils that come with it. Siemens knows this and developed the Aquaris hearing aid, the only one to receive an IP68 rating for continuous submersion under water (to three meters). It's also dust- and shock-proof, if you're further up the extreme activity lifestyle ladder. It's not just about keeping the elements out, it's also got Bluetooth meaning wearers can listen to music on smartphones and other devices while under water.

The device itself is what you might imagine a hearing aid to look like, if it was given the sports treatment, which makes it attractive to younger folk, and those of an active disposition. Most importantly, it works impressively well, which was amply shown by the demonstration we were given with the device permanently submerged in water at the booth, streaming its audio to another device. The waterproof functionality doesn't come at the expense of the sound, either, with the Aquaris sporting High-definition sound with 48 channels with frequency resolution and a 12 kHz frequency range. Given the nature of the device, you'll need to speak with your physician or ENT / otolaryngologist if this sounds like something for you. Available now.

Sean Cooper contributed to this report.

Ask Engadget: best smartphone car mount?

Ask Engadget best smartphone car mount

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Sam, who needs to find a new way of attaching a Galaxy S III to a windshield. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I've ditched my GPS unit for a Galaxy S III in my car, but I can't find a good windshield mount. Are there any models that don't use suction cups? For some reason they won't stick to my window, and yes, before you ask, yes I do keep it clean. Thanks!"

While we wouldn't recommend doing anything unhealthy, we've found a good lick on the suction cup before attaching it sometimes helps. Your mileage, however, may vary. Still, you could always try one of TomTom's generic smartphone dashboard mounts or perhaps even using a Bean Bag mount? As for a window mount that doesn't use suction cups? That's a question we'll leave for our friendly commenters to join in on.

Report: Cable Companies Look To Raise Cost For Heavy Internet Use

Major cable companies are looking to charge users based upon the amount of heavy data they use online. (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

WASHINGTON (CBS DC) ? Heavy Internet users may see their prices rise as Time Warner and other cable providers continue testing a new business model that charges customers based upon the amount of data they use.

?Usage-based pricing? ? which is similar to most wireless plans ? is what cable companies are looking to use for all Internet due to congestion they claim is clogging up many networks. In a December report, the New America Foundation said caps on data would restrict customers who want to stream movies, television shows or take online classes.

As services like streaming video, cloud data storage, and videoconferencing have increased online, the amount of Internet data consumed by individuals has simultaneously increased. However, while new services and applications require more data, most major Internet service and mobile providers in the United States are moving in the opposite direction by discouraging Internet usage by implementing more restrictive and costly data caps.

The industry?s move away from one price, all-you-can-use service is receiving criticism from consumer groups, regulators and lawmakers who worry that the new model is motivated by the cable companies? desire to boost profits when users go over their caps ? and to protect their own cable television from Internet services such as Netflix and Hulu.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) introduced a bill in December that would put limits on the cable companies? new business model by regulating how Internet providers measure customers? data use, and ensuring that data caps ?are truly designed to manage network congestion.?

Wyden?s bill failed, and the cable industry ridiculed his legislation as ?ill-conceived,? and said that it ignores the benefits to low-data Internet users.

?The innovative offerings by cable companies are positive developments for consumers and represent accepted and legitimate business practices as well as sound network management,? Brian Dietz, a spokesman for the National Cable and Telecommunications Association, said in a statement to The Wrap. ?Many consumers don?t need as much data as those who stream video or music all day.?

Under one new pricing plan, Time Warner Cable customers could save $5 on their monthly bills if they accept a cap that?s the equivalent of streaming two HD movies. They would pay $1 for every gigabyte over the monthly limit.

Comcast, the nation?s largest cable provider, began offering a tiered system for billing in some markets last year. One option offered customers 300 gigabits per month ? or about 130 hours of Netflix HD videos ? and charged them $10 extra for an additional 50 gigabits.

Quadrantid meteor shower: Will moon wash out the show?

Quadrantid meteor shower-watchers will have to deal with a three-quarter-full moon, but the event peaks overnight Wednesday, meaning the show will go on.

One of the year's meteoric show stoppers ? the Quadrantid meteor shower ? peaks overnight Wednesday.

Anyone with the good fortune of living under very dark skies on a moonless night could expect to see as many as 120 meteors an hour when the shower's source region in the sky ? or radiant ? is directly overhead.

Wednesday, however, the shower will have competition from a moon nearly three-quarters full, so moonlight will mask most of the dimmer bulbs on the shelf. Given the moon's phase, that translates into a rate of between five and 10 meteors an hour visible to people from urban centers through suburbs and into rural areas, according to estimates from the American Meteor Society.

The shower actually spans six days, starting Jan. 1. But this year Earth is encountering the bulk of this cosmic debris in the predawn darkness of Jan. 3.

While other meteor showers typically derive their names from constellations near each shower's radiant, the Quadrantids appear to come from a kind of netherworld between the end of the Big Dipper's handle and the four stars that comprise the head of Draco, the dragon. Astronomers already recognize a meteor shower each October as the Draconids. The Ursids come each December. And it's hard to get excited about something that could have been named the Dippids. So Quadrantids it is. Warning: You can't take that explanation to the bank.

Skywatchers have been observing the Quadrantids at least since 1825.

Somewhere between a short item entitled "Account of the Poison Plants of the Southern Parts of Brazil" and "Professor Buckland's Notice of the Hyaena's Den near Torqay," the Edinbrugh Philosophical Journal informed its readers that "on the 2d of January 1825, about 5 a.m.; Antonio Brucalassi ... observed ... a singular electric phenomenon." He saw what researchers later would refer to as a fireball, with "a great number of shooting stars ... seen before and after the appearance of the meteor." The issue was dated 1826.

Some 14 years after Signore Brucalassi's observation, scientists in the US and Belgium would independently posit that what Brucalassi saw was a recurring event.

In 2003, the shower was pegged to a near-Earth asteroid dubbed 2003 EH1. Using data gathered by the Lowell Observatory's Near-Earth Object Search, Peter Jenniskens, with the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif., ran calculations that showed how in the past, the object's closest approach to the sun coincided with Earth's passage through the densest part of the debris ? quite like meteors from comets, he noted.

After some additional sleuthing, he suggested that 2003 EH1 was the remnant of comet C1490 Y1, observed in Asia between 1490 and 1491 and that later broke apart.

While this year's Quadrantid shower risks being a relative washout visually, you may be able to snag more meteors on your FM radio. As meteors plummet through the atmosphere and heat to the point of glowing, they leave a streak of ionized gas behind them ? briefly. Ionized gases reflect radio signals.

By tuning to a powerful FM station roughly 800 miles away that broadcasts on a quiet part of the FM band where you live, you may be able to pick up the "ping" of a passing meteor. They sound like this. Nothing like Steely Dan, but clearly noticeable. For detailed information on observing meteor showers via radio, try this website.

Browns set to interview Kelly

CLEVELAND (AP) ? The courtship of Chip Kelly is under way.

The Browns and at least two other NFL teams are expected to interview Oregon's offensive-minded coach, who said following Thursday night's Fiesta Bowl win over Kansas State that he hopes to have the process "wrapped up quickly."

Along with the Browns, the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly in Arizona and have scheduled meetings over the next two days with Kelly.

The 49-year-old said he's entering the interview open-minded. He turned down an offer from Tampa Bay last year to return for his fourth season at Oregon, where he is 46-7. He has boosted the school's national profile with a high-powered offense capable of turning any game into a track meet.

"It's more a fact-finding mission, finding out if it fits or doesn't fit," Kelly said after the Ducks beat No. 7 Kansas State 35-17. "I've been in one interview in my life for the National Football League, and that was a year ago. I don't really have any preconceived notions about it. I think that's what this deal is all about for me. It's not going to affect us in terms of we're not on the road (recruiting). I'll get an opportunity if people do call, see where they are.

"I want to get it wrapped up quickly and figure out where I'm going to be."

Kelly is at or near the top of the Browns' list of candidates to replace Pat Shurmur, who was fired earlier this week after going 9-23 in two seasons. Cleveland owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner have been conducting interviews in Arizona all week, searching for the team's sixth coach since 1999.

The Browns have declined comment on any interviews.

Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton confirmed he interviewed with Cleveland earlier this week. The Browns have reportedly met with former Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt, Syracuse coach Doug Marrone and Penn State's Bill O'Brien, who removed himself from any consideration on Thursday night and intends to stay at the school.

Kelly doesn't have any NFL coaching experience, but aspects of his up-tempo offense are already being used by some teams.

Kelly wouldn't say if he was leaning one way or another following the Ducks' bowl win.

"I said I'll always listen, and that's what I'll do," he said. "I know that people want to talk to me because of our players. The success of our football program has always been about our guys. It's an honor for someone to say they'd want to talk to me about maybe moving on to go coach in the National Football League. But it's because of what those guys do. I'll listen, and we'll see."

Oregon could be facing possible NCAA sanctions for the school's use of recruiting services, but Kelly indicated he isn't running from anything.

"We've cooperated fully with them," he said. "If they want to talk to us again, we'll continue to cooperate fully. I feel confident in the situation."

Oregon's players gave Kelly a Gatorade bath as the final seconds ticked off the clock in Thursday night's game, and afterward a few of the Ducks seemed resigned to their coach moving on.

"We'll have to see," quarterback Marcus Mariota said. "Whatever he decides to do, we're all behind him. He's an unbelievable coach. He's not only a football coach, but he's someone that you can look to and learn a lot of life lessons from. Whatever happens, happens. But we're all behind him.

"We'll see where it takes us."

EU says its Google case not affected by U.S. ruling

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A decision by U.S. regulators to end a probe into whether Google Inc hurt rivals by manipulating internet searches will not affect the European Union's examination of the company.

"We have taken note of the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) decision, but we don't see that it has any direct implications for our investigation, for our discussions with Google, which are ongoing," said Michael Jennings, a spokesman for the European Commission, the EU executive.

U.S. regulators on Thursday ended their investigation into the giant internet company, which runs the world's most popular search engine.

Other internet companies, such as Microsoft Corp, had complained about Google tweaking its search results to give prominence to its own products. But the FTC said there was not enough evidence to pursue a big search-bias case.

The European Commission has for the past two years been investigating complaints against Google, including claims that it unfairly favored its own services in its search results.

Google presented informal settlement proposals to the Commission in July. On December 18 the Commission gave the company a month to come up with detailed proposals to resolve the investigation.

If it fails to address the complaints and is found guilty, Google could eventually be fined up to 10 percent of its revenue - a fine of up to $4 billion.

Steroids and the Hall of Fame, the Californication of the league and more

The San Francisco Giants have won two of the last three World Series, and are better poised for a run at another than they were after their 2010 title.

Tony DeMarco

Here's a look at what's likely to be the top storylines in baseball in 2013.

Ballot of controversy
No matter where you stand in the steroids debate, and where that issue heads in the future, it appears clear that there will be no first-ballot election for Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa and Mike Piazza.

That leaves Craig Biggio and Jack Morris as the likeliest to be on the stage in Cooperstown on the last Sunday in July. Voting results, which will be announced on Jan. 9, also likely will result in Jeff Bagwell getting closer to enshrinement, and boosts to the candidacies of Tim Raines and Edgar Martinez.

Uncertain is whether there ever will be enough support for Lee Smith, who did hit the 50-percent mark last year, while the grievous oversight of Alan Trammell figures to continue.

There is a real sense of urgency for Morris in his 14th year on the ballot, as Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Mike Mussina will be first-timers in 2014 (along with Frank Thomas). They will be followed by Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz in 2015, and Trevor Hoffman in 2016 (along with Ken Griffey Jr.).

Neither Hall nor MLB leadership has shown interest in making changes to the current election process. But mounting pressure spurred by the PEDs issue and related overcrowding of the ballot could lead to some electorate tweaks in the post-Bud Selig era beyond 2014.

A time limit on voters' eligibility after they no longer cover the game seems logical. So does admitting into the BBWAA more active MLB writers.

Hold those standings projections
Brett Myers signing with the Indians reduces the list by one, but several free agents who will have impacts on 2013 races remain unsigned.

Which contender will add Kyle Lohse to its rotation; Rafael Soriano as its closer? Is Michael Bourn a solution to the talent drain in Texas, or will he take a potential non-contender's cash? Does Adam LaRoche stay in D.C.? Six weeks and counting on those answers.

Daisuke Matsuzaka could spin yet another strong World Baseball Classic showing into a late-spring deal, and here are another handful of now-possible bargains with potential impact: Francisco Rodriguez, Delmon Young, Shawn Marcum and Kyle Farnsworth.

World Baseball Classic III
If you watched the 2009 Japan-Korea championship game, or upstart Brazil upset favored Panama in a play-in final in November, you realize what this series can offer.

Yes, short of shutting down the game for 10 days mid-season (which MLB owners never will agree to do), the problems with the concept will remain inherent: Timing isn't right; players don't want to risk injury/big contracts, etc.

But nothing would boost WBC acceptance and credibility more than a dominant U.S. team that wins it all in late-March in AT&T Park. It's high time for a U.S. roster that is actually motivated to win.

Too bad Bryce Harper didn't agree with that line of thinking. He's exactly what's needed ? along with Mike Trout, Andrew McCutchen, David Price and a core of the game's best young stars.

Californication
The San Francisco Giants have won two of the last three World Series, and are better poised for a run at another than they were after their 2010 title.

Project increased production from Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford, add in full seasons for Pablo Sandoval, Hunter Pence and Marco Scutaro, and the offense should score enough. And everybody knows about the pitching, plus the acumen and leadership of Brian Sabean and Bruce Bochy.

And while it's a well-established fact that money doesn't often buy championships, the Dodgers of Los Angeles and the Angels of Anaheim certainly are doing their best to buck the trend.

The result very well could be three California-based playoff teams ? and we haven't even mentioned the defending AL West-champion Oakland A's, with their emerging rotation and some of the better young talent in the game.

Even after spending $650 million or so, there still are holes and health questions with the Dodgers' roster. And the pressure to win on Don Mattingly and Co. has been ratcheted all the way up.

But considering the boatload of additions since late-July to a team that won 86 games in 2012, it's not hard to imagine 90-plus wins and a playoff spot.

No situation is potentially more explosive than the 2013 Angels. Arte Moreno's win-now impulse spending puts Mike Scioscia on the hot seat after three consecutive non-playoff seasons. No player on a new team will be watched more closely than Josh Hamilton. Jerry Dipoto's other moves also will face scrutiny.

But in the last two off-seasons, the Angels have added Albert Pujols and signed away Hamilton and C.J. Wilson from the division-rival Rangers. Their lineup is scary, Mike Trout could get better, Peter Bourjos will be unleashed in center field, and the bullpen is deeper.

Can the Tigers win a World Series for Mike Ilitch?
So many ingredients that produce championships are in place:

Three superstars in the midst of their peak production seasons. An already-potent offense poised to improve with the return of Victor Martinez and addition of Torii Hunter. A six-deep rotation as long as Rick Porcello isn't dealt away. An elite GM-manager combination.

But the Tigers apparently are willing (at least for now) to gamble on a rookie closer with some command issues, plus the returnees from their 2012 bullpen. Infield defense likely will remain an issue, too.

How good are the Blue Jays?
GM Alex Anthopoulos quietly has been putting the right pieces in place for awhile. But he blew his cover with a big-strike off-season ? and it couldn't have been more well-timed given the issues in New York and Boston, and a likely dropoff in Baltimore.

Still, here's all that needs to go right for the Jays' first postseason appearance in 20 years:

Josh Johnson and Brandon Morrow throwing 200 or so innings, plus a rebound by Ricky Romero to join R.A. Dickey and Mark Buehrle.

Sergio Santos' healthy return at the back end of the bullpen.

Jose Bautista's bounce-back to MVP candidacy after missing 70 games in 2012.

Post-PED suspension, Melky Cabrera must resemble his 2012 first-half self, or at least his 2011 Royals self ? and not the underachieving fourth-outfielder of 2010 and earlier.

Production upticks from Brett Lawrie, Colby Rasmus, J.P. Arencibia and dare we say, Adam Lind?

John Gibbons bringing it all together in his second go-round as Blue Jays manager.

Can the Yankees sustain AL East dominance?
It's hard to knock their obsession with fitting under the salary cap by 2014 because it's rooted in sound fiscal planning.

And before you predict their age-related fall from grace, keep this in mind: Their rotation has seven quality candidates if Michael Pineda bounces back, and their 2012 run differential of +136 was 204 runs better than Toronto's -68 mark.

This most likely will be the last hurrahs for Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte, and you wonder why the Yankees didn't keep Nick Swisher, or got outbid by the Pirates for Russell Martin, as every key piece will be needed in light of anticipated production drops from Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez.

It's a slippery slope the Yankees have put themselves on, and their short-term course likely will hinge in part on what they end up doing with Robinson Cano, set to hit the market next off-season.

Who has a better roster than the Nationals?
Stephen Strasburg will be unleashed for a 200-inning season, and Dan Haren replaces Edwin Jackson in the rotation. Denard Span is the key lineup addition, putting a quality leadoff hitter with speed at the top of Davey Johnson's lineup, and setting up a better defensive outfield flanked by Bryce Harper and Jayson Werth.

The LaRoche issue remains, but it's not as if they don't have a solid first-base option in Michael Morse. A full season of Drew Storen should help counteract a potential shortage of left-handed setup men. And the bench has versatility and different ingredients.

But you know what? The Nationals will have to be better, because the Braves should be, too.

Can the Reds make it back-to-back post-season appearances?
Their history under Dusty Baker ? two division titles and three losing seasons ? says no. The lineup does benefit nicely from Shin-Soo Choo in the leadoff spot ? as opposed to Drew Stubbs, or taking Brandon Phillips out of a production spot. But Choo doesn't appear to be the answer in center field.

It says here Aroldis Chapman is a better fit as an already-established dominant closer, and the innings load will be great for a two-pitch pitcher with some shoulder issues who has yet to show command of an off-speed pitch. But it's hard to fault Walt Jocketty for wanting to try something Chapman has asked for all along.

The Reds also had four starting pitchers who threw 200-plus innings in 2012 (and another at 179), and you know that's not likely to repeat.

Is the Rangers' post-season run about to end?
Two pennants and three consecutive playoff appearances mark the best run in franchise history. A great management pairing is in place, there is young talent on hand, and money in the budget. But the talent drain here has been substantial ? starting with Cliff Lee, and including Josh Hamilton, C.J. Wilson, Mike Napoli, Mike Adams, Koji Uehara, Scott Feldman and an in-decline Michael Young.

For a change, power is lacking, and never has Nelson Cruz been so critical to their success.

They'll also need Jurickson Profar to produce right away. Mike Olt, too.

There still is time to add an outfield bat and strengthen the bullpen. But the Rangers' margin for error has grown dangerously thin.

Many things come to mind this time of year. Here are several I want to share.

NO SWEAT Public Speaking - <Standing Desk

Looking Back
Standing Desk

This Stand Up Idea has proven to be Outstanding!

In 2010 I had an operation for a herniated disk. Ouch!

After the surgery, like many of you, I sat in a leather, high-back, swivel office chair at my standard office desk. The problem was: the longer I sat, the harder it was to get up and walk.

In 2012 I started investigating standing desks. Ben Franklin had one, as did Donald Rumsfeld. The more investigating I conducted, the more I was convinced that standing was better than sitting. I?m sure all my chiropractic doctor friends agree!

I saw several Facebook friends posting they had standing desks and talked to two of them about their decision. Both confirmed my research. They were not going back to sitting at a desk. After six months with my standing desk, I?m not either!

Here are some reasons:

  • Far less back pain.
    • If you?ve ever had severe back pain, you?ll know why, for this reason alone, I will not go back to sitting.
  • Way more productive.
    • You know how you pull out the chair, sit on it, pull it up to the desk, move the mouse, adjust the keyboard. . .
      • I walk up to my desk, move the mouse to wake my computer, and I?m at it!
    • We?re all familiar with the expression, ?I think better on my feet!?
  • Clients and guests love it!
    • Some of my coaching is done in my home office. All the responses have been positive. Clients agree our sessions are more productive standing than sitting.

BTW, I?ve taken the bar stool away because I never use it! It?s only available to clients, who only use it to lean on!

"NO SWEAT Public Speaking!" Audio Player IconAudio Post

I started posting the audio of each post I wrote in March, 2011. It?s one of the best decisions I?ve ever made for improving my writing and my speaking.

The thought was: an author?s writings should have a voice. Posting the audio of each article gives the reader a voice to listen to ? the author?s voice! The text is there if they prefer to read, or want to refer to a point made in the audio. Since listening and seeing are two prominent learning styles, the combination helps more site visitors?GET IT!

Initially, listening to my recording of my post was a very humbling experience. I found grammatical errors, misspellings, and paragraphs that needed rewriting.

It wasn?t just the writing that needed work! I listened and discovered my voice sometimes trailed off when it should have stayed strong. On occasion, I would mumble and would have to replay what I just heard to understand the words. (This is not a good thing for a person who speaks and coaches speaking to have to do!)

Bottom line, I am now a better writer and speaker and give this advice as one of my top recommendations for improving speaking skills!

Two important things we know about communication are:?

  1. Nonverbal trumps verbal.

As an example, our recent election debates where President Obama?s ?indifference? body language?and Vice President Biden?s ?grinning? got more press, at times, than the issues!

2. ?Most people are visual learners. (Approximately 65%.)

We believe what we see!

We also know this about YouTube and its Traffic (2011 statistics):

  • 60 hours of video are uploaded every minute, or one hour of video is uploaded to YouTube every second.
  • Over 4 billion videos are viewed a day.
  • Over 800 million unique users visit YouTube each month.
  • Over 3 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube.
  • More video is uploaded to YouTube in one month than the 3 major US networks created in 60 years.
  • In 2011, YouTube had more than 1 trillion views.
  • In 2011 there were almost 140 views for every person on Earth.

Since I?m in the Presentation Business, it makes sense to let visitors ?see? me ?show? what I preach and write about. (Yikes! - I?m feeling some pressure!)

With all this in mind, I?m constructing a small video studio. My intention is to have short videos available that give one or two Super Presentation Tips each; the kind that have the viewer saying, ?Wow! I?ll try that next time I speak!?

Cell Phone Text Message Spying Software

Cell Phone Text Message Spying Software

Sending and receiving text messages is the MOST popular method cell phone owners communicate with each other. From a psychological stand point this is understandable because sending and receiving text messages is a very low commitment and low pressure method of communication compared to phone calls.

From the perspective of spying on a cell phone, or rather, the owner of a cell phone this means the ability to spy on the SMS of a mobile device is the most important and most revealing feature of mobile tracking software. The good news is literally every single mobile tracking software program allows you to monitor their phones text messages. This means you have a ton of options and you do not have to spend much money at all. In fact for as little as $49 you can have full access to the following information regarding their cell phones SMS communications:

  1. See every single text they send and receive.
  2. See the exact time every one is sent and received.
  3. See if each messages is an incoming or outgoing.
  4. See the phone numbers they are sent to and received from. This is extremely powerful because the phone numbers they are communicating with can be input into some sort of reverse phone lookup tool which will allow you to view detailed information about the other person such as their name and wehre they live.
  5. See the exact contents of every single message exactly as they were sent and received.

Whether you are in a relationship concerned your love partner is cheating or you are a parent wanting to monitor all of the communications regarding your son or daughters phone this information you can monitor is invaluable. Keep in mind ALL mobile tracking programs allow you to track much more than text messages. You will also be able to freely monitor calls, emails sent and received, web sites visited by their mobile browser and even see their physical location at all times. The quality of these different monitoring features varies from spy app to spy app but the good news is the quality of the text messages spy feature is really great no matter which app you choose.

How Text Message Spying Works

Once the text monitoring app has been installed (either to their cell phone or to your computer) the app silently and invisibly monitors for texts sent and received. As soon as either happens the app will relay this information either to the phone spy members area OR directly in the software programs main window (in the case of remote phone spy). Even if they immediately delete every message as soon as they get it you will still be able to see it.

News ? Faster broadband to benefit UK farmers, says Vaizey ...

UK farmers will benefit from upgrades being made to the UK's broadband infrastructure, it has been claimed.

Communications Minister Ed Vaizey told the Farmer's Guardian that there is "big demand" for faster internet services in rural communities.

And gradually over the next couple of years, households and businesses in the countryside will gain access to improved fixed broadband services.

"Over the coming months, we will approve the procurement of more than 40 rural broadband programmes," Mr Vaizey stated.

These will use the government's ?530 million Rural Broadband Fund, he noted.

Mr Vaizey said 90 per cent of UK homes and businesses will be connected at super-fast speeds, while the remainder will be able to download at a rate of at least 2Mb.

The European Commission is aiming for every premises in the European Union to have access to 30Mb broadband services by 2020.

It also wants 50 per cent of citizens to be able to access 100Mb download speeds by the end of the decade.

A new fish species from Lake Victoria named in honor of the author of Darwin's Dreampond

Jan. 2, 2013 ? Two new species of cichlid fish from Lake Victoria are described by biologists from Naturalis Biodiversity Center (Research Department Marine Zoology) and the Institute of Biology Leiden (Section Integrative Zoology), the Netherlands. One of these species is named in honour of Tijs Goldschmidt, author of Darwin's Dreampond. This book, published in nine languages, describes the dramatic extinction of hundreds of cichlid species in Lake Victoria in the 1980s due to the introduced Nile perch and other human induced environmental changes.

In 1985, Leiden biologists made a survey in the Tanzanian part of the lake, with an old ferry as floating lab, to establish the status of the rapidly declining cichlids. During this expedition Tijs studied the egg spots on the anal fin of cichlids for their possible role in the rapid speciation of these fish. In the Emin Pasha Gulf, among a species nicknamed Haplochromis "argens," individuals were found with aberrant egg dummies and lacking red in the fins. Just the kind of example Tijs was looking for to test his theory of speciation by sexual selection. The aberrant individuals were provisionally named H. "dusky argens."

Both "species" play a part in Tijs' PhD thesis and in other studies. However, a taxonomic description was never made and whether H. "dusky argens" was a separate species or a colour morph remained unclear. In 1987, most cichlid species from the offshore waters of the lake had disappeared, and with them the urge of taxonomic descriptions.

Now, 25 years later, about a quarter of the cichlid species have recovered in the "Nile perch desert," some of them became even more abundant than in the past, but the former common H. "argens" is still extremely rare. The status of H. "dusky-argens" is unknown as it was only caught in the remote Emin Pasha Gulf, which is not sampled nowadays. Research on successfully resurgent species shows that they were able to adapt morphologically to the new environmental conditions. Their body shape, for instance, changed, so that burst swimming to escape predators improved. Preliminary results suggest that such a response is not found in H. "argens."

The above observations triggered the present taxonomic study as a baseline for further research. It shows that several taxonomic characters differ more between the co-occurring populations of H. "argens" and H. "dusky argens" in the Emin Pasha Gulf, than between populations from different locations. This suggests that they are indeed two species, which are morphologically driven apart at places where they co-occur. In case of H. "argens" the nickname was upgraded to the formal name, while H. "dusky-argens" is now named H. goldschmidti.
