New estimate of deaths in Syria shocks U.N.

BEIRUT (AP) ? At least 60,000 people have been killed in Syria's civil war, with monthly casualty figures steadily increasing since the conflict began almost two years ago, according to a new analysis released Wednesday by the United Nations.

The death toll is a third more than the figure of 45,000 given by activists opposed to the regime of President Bashar Assad ? the first time that the global body's estimates are higher.

It comes as activists report that a Syrian warplane blasted a gas station near Damascus on Wednesday, killing and wounding dozens of people and igniting a huge fire in what could be one of the bloodiest attacks in weeks during the 22-month conflict.

Independent experts compared 147,349 killings reported by seven different sources ? including the government ? for the study, which was commissioned by the U.N. human rights office.

By removing duplicates they arrived at a list of 59,648 individuals killed between the start of the uprising on March 15, 2011, and Nov. 30, 2012. In each case, the victim's first and last name, the date and the location of his or her death were known.

"Given there has been no let-up in the conflict since the end of November, we can assume that more than 60,000 people have been killed by the beginning of 2013," U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said in a statement. "The number of casualties is much higher than we expected, and is truly shocking."

The real death toll is likely to be even greater because reports containing incomplete information were excluded and a significant number of killings may not have been documented at all by the sources available.

"There are many names not on the list for people who were quietly shot in in the woods," Pillay's spokesman Rupert Colville told The Associated Press.

The data, which didn't distinguish among soldiers, rebels and civilians, also show that the killing in Syria has accelerated.

During the summer of 2011, shortly after the uprising against Assad began, the monthly death toll stood at around 1,000. A year later, an average of 5,000 were killed each month, the U.N. said.

Most of the killings occurred in Homs, followed by rural Damascus, Idlib, Aleppo, Daraa and Hama. At least three quarters of the victims were male.

"The failure of the international community, in particular the Security Council, to take concrete actions to stop the blood-letting, shames us all," Pillay said. "Collectively, we have fiddled at the edges while Syria burns."

The U.N. rights chief warned that thousands more would die or suffer terrible injuries if the conflict continues, and repeated her call that those responsible for the killings ? which in some cases could amount to war crimes ? should be held accountable.

"We must not compound the existing disaster by failing to prepare for the inevitable ? and very dangerous ? instability that will occur when the conflict ends," she said.

"Serious planning needs to get under way immediately, not just to provide humanitarian aid to all those who need it, but to protect all Syrian citizens from extra-judicial reprisals and acts of revenge" like those seen in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and Congo, she said.

What began with peaceful protests has evolved into a full-scale civil war in Syria, with scores of armed groups fighting regime forces across the Arab country.

Anti-regime activists said Wednesday that a single Russian-built MiG fighter fired a missile that hit the gas station, setting off an inferno in the eastern suburb of Mleiha. Black smoke billowed from the site. An amateur video posted online showed charred bodies and gruesome carnage at the scene.

Mohammed Saeed, an activist who visited the site, said the missile struck as drivers waited in line with their cars at the station. Syria has been facing a fuel crisis, and people often must wait for hours to get gasoline.

Meanwhile, rebels have been targeting airports, including the Mannagh military helicopter base near the Turkish border.

Need a last minute dessert idea for your New Year's Eve festivities? This sweet treat comes together so quickly it gives new meaning to the phrase "easy as pie"! And it's so delicious that your fellow party-goers won't even notice how healthy it is!

?

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 12 ounce package silken tofu
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup?1 cup natural peanut butter?1 9-inch premade graham cracker crust
  • 1/2 cup chopped chocolate-covered pretzels (Trader Joe?s carries vegan chocolate covered pretzels)

Directions:

  1. Melt the chocolate chips in a double boiler. (I fill a small sauce pan with water and then place another pan that?s about the same size on top. I turn the burner on low and stir constantly.)
  2. Mix the melted chocolate, tofu, maple syrup and peanut butter in a food processor or high speed blender until all ingredients are blended and smooth.
  3. Pour the contents into the crust and refrigerate for a few hours, until the filling is firm.
  4. Sprinkle the pretzels over the top of the pie and gently press them down into the pie filling, so they won?t fall off when you slice it.
  5. Slice and watch it disappear!

Happy New Year!

13 new space missions to watch in 2013

This year has been a busy one for space missions, and it looks like next year will ramp things up even more.

Though NASA has retired its space shuttles, astronauts and cosmonauts are still launching regularly on Russian rockets to the International Space Station, and will continue to do so. Plus, China is planning another manned docking mission for 2013, and many more countries, such as South Korea, India, Canada and a coalition of European nations, will launch robotic science probes next year.

Here's a look at 13 notable launches to look out for in the coming year:

    1) Suborbital Test Flights: With luck, 2013 will see a host of significant test flights for the private space companies developing manned suborbital vehicles to take paying passengers on brief joyrides to the edge of space. Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo has flown numerous glide tests, but it's due to make its first powered flight using its rocket engine sometime in 2013. Another company called XCOR Aerospace plans to test fly its Lynx suborbital vehicle next year. Both firms aim to carry their first passengers in 2014.

    2) South Korea's Third Launch: South Korea will try for a third time to loft its Korea Space Launch Vehicle (KSLV) 1 booster successfully to orbit. Previous launch attempts in August 2009 and June 2010, which lifted off from a site in southern South Korea, both failed. But the third time might be a charm for South Korea, which will attempt to blast off a test satellite called the Science and Technology Satellite 2C (STSAT 2C). Launch is expected sometime in January 2013.

    3) Indian/French SARAL/AltiKa: This satellite, a collaboration between India and France, is intended to study the surface height of Earth's seas from space. Called ocean altimetry, the research has many applications for environmental science and oceanography. The spacecraft is due to be launched Jan. 28 by an Indian Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), which will also carry NEOSSat, an instrument designed to search for near-Earth asteroids that could pose a risk to our planet, and a Canadian space surveillance satellite called Sapphire. The mission will lift off from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in India.

    4) First Cygnus Flights: The private space company Orbital Sciences Corp. is one of two firms with a NASA contract to deliver cargo to the International Space Station on unmanned spacecraft (the other is SpaceX). In February, Orbital Sciences plans to launch its Antares rocket on its first test flight, which will carry a model of its robotic Cygnus spacecraft. The launch will blast off from the company's complex on Wallops Island in Virginia.

If the Antares test flight goes well, the first functional Cygnus spacecraft is scheduled to fly on its initial test flight to the International Space Station April 5.

    5) SpaceX Dragon Flights: Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX), the other commercial spchinaace company hired by NASA to carry supplies to the space station, launched its Dragon cargo ship?maiden test flight to the orbital laboratory last May. That successful flight was followed by SpaceX's first cargo delivery mission to the station in October.

The company, founded by billionaire Elon Musk, will continue to fly cargo delivery missions to the space station next year, with launches scheduled for March 1 and Sept. 30 out of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. These flights are vital for keeping the space station fully stocked, and also help pave the way for the manned missions SpaceX hopes to launch aboard Dragon in coming years.

    6) Space Station Crew Launches: Three launches of crewmembers to the International Space Station are planned for 2013, with liftoffs from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan scheduled for March 28, May 28, and Sept. 25. Each launch will carry three spaceflyers from the space station partner agencies ? the United States, Russia, Canada, Japan, and Europe ? aboard Russian Soyuz spacecraft. Crewmembers typically stay for five or six months each, and a rotating crew of three to six people is always onboard the orbiting laboratory.

    7) Canada's Cassiope: The Canadian Space Agency's Cassiope (short for Cascade Smallsat and Ionospheric Polar Explorer) spacecraft is due to launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from California's Vandenberg Air Force Basesometime in April. The satellite will carry a suite of science instruments to study how solar storms interact with charged particles inEarth's ionosphere. The vehicle will also test out new communications technology. The flight is significant not just for Canada, but for SpaceX, which has never before launched from Vandenberg. Additionally, the launch will mark the first time a Falcon 9 will use the company's new in-house made Merlin 1D engines.

    8) Space Station Cargo Launches: The next year will likely see numerous launches of cargo to the International Space Station aboard a suite of vehicles from Japan, Europe and Russia, in addition to the private cargo launches from SpaceX and Orbital Sciences. Russian Progress launches are scheduled for Feb. 12, April 24, and July 24, while Japan's HTV freighter will lift off July 15, and the European Space Agency's ATV is scheduled for a liftoff April 18. Each of these tried-and-true robotic spacecraft will deliver food, hardware and science experiments for the crew of the orbital outpost. [Photos: Space Station's Robotic Cargo Ship Fleet]

    9) ESA's Space Swarm: The Swarm spacecraft, built by the European Space Agency, is due to launch into a polar orbit in April on a Eurockot Rockot rocket from Russia. The satellite will carry three instruments to study how Earth's geomagnetic field changes over time. The mission aims to offer insight into Earth's climate and interior composition.

    10) NASA's Iris: NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (Iris) satellite is a sun-studying mission to analyze the flow of energy through our star's atmosphere and heliosphere. Iris is due to launch aboardan Orbital Sciences Pegasus XL rocket, which takes off in midair after being lofted by a carrier plane from Vandenberg Air Force Base. The flight is scheduled for April 28 or 29.

    11) China's Shenzhou 10: Scheduled for June, China's Shenzhou 10 mission will be the fifth manned spaceflight for China. The mission will take launch three Chinese astronauts, including a female spaceflyer, to dock with the nation's Tiangong 1 module in orbit. The flight is a follow-up to the historic Shenzhou 9 mission of June 2012, which marked the country's first manned space docking. The next launch will bring China a step closer to establishing a manned space station and potentially landing people on the moon. Shenzhou 10, like Shenzhou 9 before it, will lift off from China's Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on a Long March 2F rocket. [Photos of China's Shenzhou 9 Mission]

    12) NASA's Ladee: The Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Experiment (Ladee) from NASA is a moon orbiter intended to study the moon's transient atmosphere and the ubiquitous particles of dust blanketing its surface that are often seen levitating due to electrostatic forces. Ladee is due to launch aboard a U.S. Air Force Minotaur 5 rocket from Wallops Island on Aug. 12.

    13) NASA's Mars Maven: NASA's next Mars orbiter is due to launch sometime in a 20-day window between Nov. 18 and Dec. 7 to enable it to enter orbit around the Red Planet in September 2014. The Mars Atmosphere And Volatile EvolutioN spacecraft, or Maven for short, will study how Mars loses atmospheric gases to space. The mission will launch aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Auto Insurance Coverage Data To Help You | How To Handle Your ...

Selecting the right auto insurance plan can be considered a difficult task. Coverage can be expanded to provide a replacement vehicle, cover medical costs, provide roadside service and protect against uninsured motorists. More often that not, they find they are overpaying for car insurance and can usually get lower rates and premiums less expensive protection. Buying automobile insurance might appear very complicated, however, if you understand that which you are doing, you can simply locate a policy to your car which will fit you. Be intelligent and take the serious amounts of save the amount of money to have auto insurance, because ultimately it?ll make you stay out of trouble as well as help you save money if you wreck your car. Be intelligent and consider the serious amounts of save the money to have auto insurance, because ultimately it will keep you out of trouble also as save money should you wreck your car. Well, there are many methods for you to work to bring on the cost of your insurance without allowing the grade of your coverage to suffer. If you have a car, you need to have insurance for it.

Check and find out if your car insurance provider offers any low-mileage breaks. If another victim within the accident makes a coverage claim or perhaps a police report is filed, the chances that your insurance company will catch wind of it rise exponentially. Insurance companies are well-aware that senior drivers are, statistically, the safest on the road. What your auto insurer doesn?t know, however, can not be applied for a discount, so be sure to show them your mileage each year car insurance policies rates coverage queries and facts. As was stated at the start of the article, finding a policy with great coverage that?s still affordable can seem like an insurmountable feat. Another type of coverage is property damage liability. You can contact local car insurance providers to look for the factors which they consider in the wedding it comes towards the vehicle, which includes the make, model, and year. Do you realize what bodily injury liability coverage is? This sort of coverage covers any injury or death claims against you, along with all the legal costs, if your car injures or kills another person.

Following a vehicle accident, be sure you capture some basic data from any other drivers before you decide to file a claim together with your car insurance company. Raising the deductible can lower auto insurance rates, but inside the event of a major accident that?s your fault, you must pay that amount. This can be a great method to save money. Your bank card agreement will likely also not cover the insurance coverage related to the renting of your commercial truck. You wouldn?t like to have in the wreck and discover something expensive wasn?t included in your insurance.

Check out your state?s minimum insurance guidelines, and follow them. Most companies now offer a quote system online so that you do not have to spend valuable time about the phone or in an office, just to discover out just how much money it?ll cost you. They do this in an effort to cover any losses they may incur should a major accident occur. It is good to know if the company that holds your policy is going to be around to consider proper care of any claims you may have.

Be careful about what kind of repairs your insurance will cover. If you?re taking good care of your car, and are careful whenever you drive, you won?t ever have to file a claim. Another company may have better rates, but you won?t know until you look. Your driving record is exactly what determines the price of your automobile insurance. You should read carefully your medical health insurance policy to create sure you?re covered for everything.

Our Happily Ever Afters: Christmas Family Fun!

Get ready for picture overload! I decided to combine all of our fun Christmas activities into one post, because as usual, I'm behind in staying up to date! The month of December was very simple for us, but so special. We really focused in on spending time together, and I think it made ALL the difference.

Just for cuteness, here are my two littles one Sunday in matching Christmas outfits!

One night we drove to a small town nearby, where a local church does an event called Bethlehem Village. It was SO GOOD!!!! The kids absolutely loved it, and we did too!

We started out in the sanctuary singing carols while we waited our turn to go through.

Then we made our way into the village area.

We were given a bag of coins to take with us so we could buy things in the village. But before we entered, we had to pay our taxes and register for the census!
I think the absolute CUTEST thing was seeing Evy and Liam "pay" for what they wanted to buy. There was just something about them reaching into their little coin purses to get money - I died!!!

Then, at the very end, we walked into where Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus were. It was the sweetest thing - and honestly, it felt very real to me. The kids were so excited to see the baby, but it was extra sweet because the baby was sleeping and we had to whisper. Somehow that just added to how special and sacred it felt.

After we finished walking through, the church provided a free chili supper. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and plan to make it a Christmas tradition!

As I mentioned previously, we did a few little Advent activities with the kids. We made a few ornaments from Truth in the Tinsel, which the kids LOVED. They were so excited to make something for our tree!

Look at Liam's adorable little face!

Another night, we made a gingerbread house. I have to be honest - getting that thing to stay together was almost my undoing, but once we got the icing to hold, we were good to go. The kids thought this was just the most fun thing EVER, and it was so entertaining to watch them "work together" on it!

I ordered a felt nativity set from this Etsy seller (it's a great shop!) and the kids really enjoyed talking about the Christmas story as we put the different pieces in place. Liam chose not to have his picture taken (ha!), but both littles absolutely loved this.

It was a wonderful season full of family and FUN!
