UK farmers will benefit from upgrades being made to the UK's broadband infrastructure, it has been claimed.
Communications Minister Ed Vaizey told the Farmer's Guardian that there is "big demand" for faster internet services in rural communities.
And gradually over the next couple of years, households and businesses in the countryside will gain access to improved fixed broadband services.
"Over the coming months, we will approve the procurement of more than 40 rural broadband programmes," Mr Vaizey stated.
These will use the government's ?530 million Rural Broadband Fund, he noted.
Mr Vaizey said 90 per cent of UK homes and businesses will be connected at super-fast speeds, while the remainder will be able to download at a rate of at least 2Mb.
The European Commission is aiming for every premises in the European Union to have access to 30Mb broadband services by 2020.
It also wants 50 per cent of citizens to be able to access 100Mb download speeds by the end of the decade.
