Chennai located on the south-eastern coast, off the Bay of Bengal lies at a distance of approximately 325 km from Trichy and can be easily travelled by road, rail and air. The two cities are connected by the NH 45 also known as the Grand Southern Trunk road or GST.
If driving on the NH 45, you pass through towns like Vandalur, Chengalpattu, Tindivanam, Villupuram, Ulundurpettai, Perambalur and Srirangam. The road journey will take about 6 hours. Hiring a car to drive from Chennai to Trichy could cost you between Rs. 12 to Rs. 25 per kilometre depending on the car. There are many petrol pumps and restaurants with clean rest rooms on the highway. If taking a taxi one could also see the various sightseeing options in Trichy at ease.
Some of the popular sightseeing options in Trichy are the temples built by the Cholas, the Pallavas and the Pandyas which include the Tiruvanaikkaval Temple, Ranganathaswamy Temple, Mariamman Temple, Viralimalai Murugan Temple, Vayalur Murugan Temple, Vekkaliamman Temple, Gunaseelam Vishnu Temple, a few Gothic churches like the St. John and St. Josephs Church, the world's oldest dams, the 'Kallanai', built by Karikala Chola across the river Cauvery, and the 83 m high rock, is believed to be among the oldest rocks in the world, and has the ruins of a fort and a temple at the top.
Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) ply buses from Chennai to Trichy and the bus journey will take about 6 hours. You can also choose from an array of private bus operators if you want to travel by a/c or the more comfortable Volvo buses. The Trichy bus stand is about 7 km from the centre of the city and is easily accessible by auto rickshaws and buses.
Trains from Chennai take about 6 hours to reach Trichy and are a more convenient and time saving option compared to travelling by bus or cab. Trains to Trichy depart from 2 stations in Chennai, Egmore and Chennai Central. Trichy railway station is only 4 km from the city centre. The trains that run between Chennai and Trichy are Guruvayur Express (16127), Mangalore Express (16107), Bhubaneswar Rameswaram Weekly Express (18496) and Vaigai Express (12635). The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) web site facilitates online booking of tickets; one can also book tickets from the numerous railway reservation counters.
Another alternative is to take a direct flight from Chennai to Trichy. The flight is just an hour long.
