Power in a Pinch: GE Mobile Gas Turbines Improve Africa's Grid Reliability and Counter Rising Diesel Costs

Economies cannot thrive and grow for long without a reliable supply of power. That?s why GE designed its TM2500+ trailer-mounted aeroderivative gas turbines; the ecomagination-qualified units quickly generate reliable and efficient power anywhere, on or off the grid, while keeping emissions low.

In December, five of the TM2500+ units will add 120 megawatts of rapid and mobile power in Angola to counter the rising cost of diesel fuel and improve grid reliability. The TM2500+ is part of GE?s PowerXpand portfolio, which was unveiled earlier this year to help meet the growing need for rapid power generation throughout Africa and around the world.

?With a population of 19 million people but only a 26 percent electrification rate, Angola is a perfect example of how a country can use GE?s PowerXpand? Portfolio to provide greater long-term energy and economic security to residents and businesses alike,? said Darryl Wilson, president and CEO?aeroderivative gas turbines for GE Power & Water. ?Our TM2500+ and other products in our PowerXpand portfolio are ideally suited to help meet the demand for fast, mobile power in countries that are seeking more permanent energy and water infrastructure solutions.?

The fuel-flexible system runs on either natural gas or liquid-distillate and can be used to support permanent power installations, as backup power to support natural disaster relief efforts or for plant shutdowns and equipment maintenance.

The units are going to LS Energia (LSE) ? an engineering, procurement and construction company ? on behalf of the Angolan state utility Empresa Nacional Eectricidade-E.P. (ENE). This is GE?s third TM2500+ power project in Angola.

?GE?s TM2500+ systems offer the right combination of efficiency and reliability needed to help ENE reduce its fuel costs and increase the reliability of grid service in order to support continued economic growth in Angola. We are providing a complete solution from fuel supply to electricity on the grid. Our partnership with GE gives the customer a single point of contact,? said Nyembo Ilunga, President, LSE Africa.

GE?s PowerXpand? Portfolio features products designed to address both temporary and permanent power needs ?in a pinch?. Industrial businesses, developing communities and government agencies managing disaster relief all benefit from the portfolio, which includes GE aeroderivative gas turbines, Jenbacher and Waukesha gas engines and Clean Cycle waste heat recovery solutions.
